Volitional Form — Let's / I will

Level: N4 · Module: Verbs · 3 practice questions

Expressing intention or invitation

Explanation

Volitional = "let's" or "I shall". Godan: -u → -ou (いく→いこう). Ichidan: drop る + よう (たべる→たべよう). Irregular: する→しよう, くる→こよう. Polite: ましょう.

Formation: Godan verbs: change the final u sound to o and add う (行く becomes 行こう, 読む becomes 読もう). Ichidan verbs: add よう to the stem (食べる becomes 食べよう). Irregular: する becomes しよう and 来る becomes 来よう. Polite form: ます stem + ましょう.

Usage & nuance: The volitional form means let us or I will. The polite ましょう invites others to join, as in 行きましょう, while the plain form is used in casual speech and in patterns like 〜ようと思う to express an intention. It often pairs with とする to mean try to.

Compare: Volitional vs 〜たい. 〜たい states a personal desire (行きたい), while the volitional proposes or resolves an action (行こう). For inviting someone, ませんか is a softer alternative to ましょう.
