Japanese Learning FAQ

Answers to common questions about learning Japanese, JLPT levels, kana, kanji and how to use Step Ahead Japanese.

Is Step Ahead Japanese free to use?

Yes. All grammar topics, vocabulary, kanji and verb content is free to read. There is no paywall on learning material.

Which JLPT levels does the platform cover?

The platform is structured for JLPT N5 through N1. N5 and N4 content is available now, with N3, N2 and N1 being expanded over time.

Are explanations available in Hindi?

Yes. Every grammar topic includes a Hindi explanation alongside the English explanation, and vocabulary lists show Hindi meanings.

How many kanji do I need for JLPT N5?

JLPT N5 requires roughly 100 kanji and about 800 vocabulary words. N4 requires around 300 kanji and 1,500 words.

What is the difference between hiragana, katakana and kanji?

Hiragana is used for native words and grammar, katakana for loanwords and emphasis, and kanji for content words. All three are used together in real Japanese text.

How does the spaced-repetition vocabulary review work?

Vocabulary is scheduled with an SM-2 style algorithm. Words you find hard reappear sooner, and words you know well are spaced further apart to improve long-term retention.

Do I need to know hiragana before kanji?

Yes. Learning hiragana and katakana first makes kanji study far easier because kanji readings are written in kana.

How long does it take to reach JLPT N5?

With consistent daily study, most learners reach N5 in three to six months, covering hiragana, katakana, basic grammar, roughly 100 kanji and around 800 words.
