〜ている — Ongoing action / state

Level: N4 · Module: Grammar Patterns · 6 practice questions

Progressive and resultant state

Explanation

〜ている has two uses:

  • Action in progress: たべている = "is eating"
  • Resultant state: けっこんしている = "is married"

Formation: Attach いる (plain) or います (polite) to the て form of a verb: 食べて + いる becomes 食べている. Negative: ていない. Past: ていた.

Usage & nuance: 〜ている has three main meanings. It shows an action in progress (今、本を読んでいる), a repeated or habitual action (毎日走っている), and a state resulting from a change (結婚している, 知っている). Which meaning applies depends on the verb: action verbs show progress, while change verbs show the resulting state.

Compare: 〜ている vs 〜ます. 食べます means I will eat or I eat, naming the act itself, while 食べています means I am eating right now, describing it as ongoing.
