たい Form — Wanting to do

Level: N5 · Module: Verbs · 3 practice questions

Express desire to do something

Explanation

たい expresses "want to do". Form: drop ます from masu-form + たい. It conjugates like an い-adjective.

Formation: Take the ます stem and add たい (食べます becomes 食べたい). たい conjugates like an い adjective: negative たくない, past たかった, te-form たくて. The desired thing often takes が.

Usage & nuance: 〜たい expresses your own wish to do something. It normally describes the speaker, because you cannot state another person desire directly; for someone else, use たがっている or a quotation like 行きたいと言っています. In questions, 〜たいですか can ask about the listener.

Compare: 〜たい vs ほしい. 〜たい means I want to do a verb (行きたい), while ほしい means I want a noun (車がほしい). For a third person, ほしがっている is the parallel form to たがっている.
