Explanation
尊敬語 elevates the actions of others (customers, superiors). Patterns: お〜になる, 〜れる/られる, special verbs (いらっしゃる, おっしゃる, ごらんになる, めしあがる).
Formation: Three patterns: お + ます stem + になる (読む becomes お読みになる), the passive form used politely (行かれる), and special verbs (いらっしゃる, 召し上がる, なさる, ご覧になる, おっしゃる, ご存じ).
Usage & nuance: 尊敬語 elevates the actions of the listener or a third party to show respect. Use it for customers, teachers, and superiors, but not for your own actions. When a special verb exists, such as 召し上がる for 食べる, it is preferred over the general pattern.
Compare: 尊敬語 vs 謙譲語. 尊敬語 describes what others do and raises them (先生がご覧になる), while 謙譲語 describes what you do and lowers you (私が拝見する). Mixing them is a common error.
