Marks the direct object of a verb

Explanation

を (pronounced "o") marks the direct object — the thing the action is done to.

Structure: [Object] を [Verb]

Formation: Attach を directly after a noun to mark the direct object of a transitive verb. It is written を but pronounced o.

Usage & nuance: を marks what an action is done to, as in ご飯を食べる. It also marks the space that movement passes through or leaves, as in 公園を散歩する (walk through the park), 空を飛ぶ (fly through the sky), and 家を出る (leave the house). Use を only with transitive verbs; intransitive verbs take が instead.

Compare: を vs が. ドアを開ける (I open the door) uses を because you act on the door, while ドアが開く (the door opens) uses が because the door acts on its own.
