Explanation
The particle は (pronounced "wa") marks the topic of a sentence. It tells the listener "as for X, ...".
Structure: [Topic] は [Comment] です。
Formation: Attach は directly after a noun or noun phrase. It replaces the role that would otherwise be marked, so you say 私は rather than 私がは.
Usage & nuance: は marks the topic, the thing the speaker is talking about. It sets the frame for the rest of the sentence, and it often implies contrast: 今日は行きません can mean today, as opposed to other days, I am not going. Use は when the information after it is new and the noun before it is already known or being introduced as a topic.
Compare: は vs が. は presents old or topical information and puts stress on what follows, while が highlights the noun right before it as new or exclusive information. 私は田中です answers who are you, while 私が田中です stresses that it is I, not someone else, who is Tanaka.
