Explanation
が marks the subject, particularly when introducing new information or answering "who/what?".
Compare: わたしは がくせい です (topic) vs だれが がくせい ですか (subject).
Formation: Attach が directly after a noun or noun phrase. It never combines with は in the same slot.
Usage & nuance: が marks the grammatical subject, especially when that subject is new, unknown, or singled out. It is required with existence verbs あります and います, with likes, skills, and desires such as 好き, 上手, ほしい, できる, and in relative clauses like 私が買った本. It also appears in neutral descriptions where nothing is being contrasted.
Compare: が vs は. が answers the question who or what did it, focusing on the noun before it. は answers what about that noun, focusing on the predicate. だれが来ましたか is answered with 田中さんが来ました, but 田中さんはどうしましたか would be answered with 田中さんは帰りました.
