Explanation
ます form is the polite present/future. Negative: ません. Past: ました. Past negative: ませんでした.
Godan: う→います, く→きます, す→します, etc. Ichidan: drop る + ます. Irregular: する→します, くる→きます.
Formation: Take the verb stem, the ます stem, and add the ending. Present: ます. Negative: ません. Past: ました. Past negative: ませんでした. For example 食べる becomes 食べます, and 行く becomes 行きます.
Usage & nuance: The ます form is the polite verb ending and the backbone of polite conversation. It does not change for person, so 行きます can mean I go, you go, or they go depending on context. Use it with people you have just met, with superiors, and in most formal situations.
Compare: ます vs plain form. ます is polite and safe in public, while the plain form (行く, 食べる) is used in casual speech and inside longer sentences such as 行くと思います. You can also attach ましょう for let us.
