Explanation
です means "is/am/are" politely. Structure: [A] は [B] です。
Negative: じゃありません. Past: でした. Past negative: じゃありませんでした.
Formation: Attach です to nouns and な adjectives (学生です, 元気です). With い adjectives you add です without changing the adjective (寒いです). Negative: じゃないです or ではありません. Past: でした. Past negative: じゃなかったです or ではありませんでした.
Usage & nuance: です is the polite copula, the polite way to say to be or to equal. It raises the register of a sentence and is the default ending in conversation with strangers, teachers, and superiors. Do not use です to attach to a plain verb; verbs need ます instead.
Compare: です vs だ. だ is the plain copula used with close friends and in casual writing, while です is its polite counterpart. This is a book is 本だ in plain speech but 本です in polite speech.
