Level: N5 · Module: Verbs · 3 practice questions

There is / there are — for objects and living things

Explanation

あります for inanimate things (objects, plants). います for animate beings (people, animals).

Structure: [Location] に [Thing] が あります/います。

Formation: Use あります for things that cannot move on their own and います for people and animals. They follow the pattern place に thing が あります/います. Negative: ありません and いません.

Usage & nuance: あります covers inanimate objects, plants, and events (会議があります), while います covers living, self-moving beings such as people, dogs, and fish. The thing being described usually takes が, and the place takes に. For possession, the person is the topic: 私は車があります.

Compare: あります vs います vs です. です identifies or equates (これは本です), あります states existence of a thing (本があります), and います states existence of a living being (猫がいます).
